Welcome to your DXC-curated resource for industry news

The trends in the healthcare industry are more apparent to consumers than ever before in this new year. Rolling toward our third year post pandemic, we continue to see healthcare move more aggressively to keep up with other industries. The trends, as documented by Forbes, (Dec 6, 2022) include Artificial Intelligence (AI), remote healthcare, retail healthcare, wearable medical devices, and personalized medicine. Though not always evident, the overall impact of these trends continues to move the healthcare environment toward providing high-quality care with improved patient outcomes.

Key trends for payers and providers in 2023

DXC perspective

As the industry looks at navigating and innovating through 2023, rising cost pressures, labor challenges, a dynamic shift in the mix of payers, increasing consumerization, and seamless digital-to- physical-care delivery continue to influence MedTech innovation. To secure a place in the evolving care delivery dynamics, health systems should prioritize consumer-centric innovation throughout their care delivery ecosystem to disrupt before being disrupted.

Improving clinician experience

Improving the clinician experience — whether it be physicians, nurses or other support staff — is one of the leading initiatives currently on the minds of healthcare administrators. The challenge is reducing the administrative burden, and technology can assist this through greater efficiencies while also improving employee satisfaction and retention.

DXC perspective

At the recently concluded 41st Annual Healthcare Conference 2023 hosted by J.P.Morgan in San Francisco (JPM 23), top biotech company CEOs, investors and key regulators like the FDA outlined the financial and policy outlook for the industry. In addition to key deals and business forecast, there were some notable announcements — among them, an innovative throughput-based pricing model from Element that enables a $200 price per genome, FDA’s focus on increased clinical trial diversity, and conditional accelerated approvals that demand transparent and frequent data reporting to enable quicker availability of therapeutics to patients.

MedTech regulation

The post COVID-19 surge in applications for review of new technologies and the burgeoning role of AI and machine learning, combined with swift advances in monitoring technology and wearable sensors, have pushed digital health into the limelight. Supply chain challenges are driving the need for rapid product change approvals to avoid product supply shortages. These shortages continue to expose the fact that standard regulatory review timelines limit responsiveness to supply chain challenges. Therefore, faster approvals are among the priorities for 2023 as AI moves to the forefront to play a bigger role.

Fraud prevention in behavior telehealth

The pandemic turbocharged the convergence of telemedicine and behavioral healthcare. The effects of stay-at-home orders, remote work, job losses, childcare challenges and health risk concerns exponentially increased the need for behavioral health treatment. A study cited in this article notes that behavioral health visits through telehealth channels rose from 0.5% in 2019 to 40% in 2022.

Changes in benefits coverage, new care delivery modalities and rapid adoption of new techniques in a compressed timeframe inevitably introduce risk. Not surprisingly, therefore, there is evidence of increased fraud activity associated with remote behavioral health billing.

Payers can partner with the provider community to proactively address these emerging issues. The use of data analytics and detective algorithms — with the provider’s input — can ensure benefits remain available to all members when they need them most. Using such analytics can also help protect the integrity of the plan.
