Orchestration not isolation: An interesting concept to consider when addressing medical debt and especially unpaid medical debt.

A 2022 Kaiser Family Foundation study of federally reported data found 1 in 10 (23 million) adults owe at least $250, 11 million owe more than $2,000, and 3 million people owe more than $10,000. These are disturbing numbers, but on the eve of a potentially severe economic recession, it’s even worse.

Significant unpaid medical debt adversely affects individuals, hospitals, health plans, financial institutions, and federal and state governments.

Well-intentioned efforts addressing the problem are being made by every constituent across the healthcare ecosystem. Hospitals are working with patients to assist with payments, health plans are creating new products to help members manage expensive conditions, pharmaceutical companies assist with programs to make drugs more affordable, and governments are promulgating regulations such as the No Surprise Act and Hospital Transparency Rule.

Every effort, program, and regulation make an impact. However, the lack of coordination at the member/patient level creates risk that positive impacts on managing medical debts may be blunted.
