Topic: Coping with the 3C’s – Covid, China, and Climate
Synopsis: There are now immense external forces transforming the long-stable utility and energy industries. Covid-19 has greatly altered commercial and residential energy patterns, as well as all manner of office and field work. China has emerged as a leader in critical solar and battery technologies, as well as smart vehicles, cities and grids; and of course, climate change will require fundamental shifts in the way energy is created, stored and managed, while sharply increasing the business resiliency challenge. Only a modern cloud-based business/IT operating model will enable companies to respond readily and effectively to these “3C” pressures, and this creates important leadership opportunities for the traditional Enterprise IT function.
Damian Bunyan
Chief Information Officer – Uniper SE
Damian is Uniper’s CIO. Alongside this he also has responsibility for a number of the company’s administrative functions that require a high of technology.
Uniper was carved out of the larger E.ON group in 2016. This presented Damian and his team with the challenge of setting up their own standalone technology. This presented the perfect opportunity to exploit the cloud and all that it has to offer. While some IT teams debate the potential benefits and costs, Damian and his team had no option but to embark on a strategy of modernising their entire IT landscape. This has paid back significantly.
